Harpenden Air Cadets : Waldegrave Park

Why Choose Air Cadets?..

Well, why not? First and foremost, Air Cadets is a place where young people meet regularly. In that regard it is not unlike the Girl Guides, the local football club or indeed hanging around in groups outside the local newsagents/chip shop. But there we leave the similarities behind; we are a disciplined and structured youth organisation, with goals and serious values.

The RAF gives a lot of financial support to the Air Cadets in recognition of the fact that more than half of its aircrew were air cadets. The structured training and personal development that local cadet squadrons provide coincides with a marked reduction in the failure and dropout rates of aircrew candidates who are former air cadets. Given the astronomical cost of training air personnel (£2m for frontline jet pilots), the RAF takes a serious interest in our well being.

Most cadets have no interest whatsoever in joining the RAF. Many are keeping their options open. Others just enjoy gaining nationally recognised qualifications, accredited training and generally enjoying themselves with new friends, twice a week.

Ten Reasons to Join The Air Cadets at Harpenden:

1. Learn to fly for free in RAF aircraft. See the world from 5000 feet up.

2. Get your Duke of Edinburgh's Scheme. Employers love it.

3. Experience life on a busy military base, sampling various jobs.

4. Make lots of new friends all over the country. And in Harpenden!

5. Get a BTEC Award in Aviation Studies. Help your CV out.

6. Get quality leadership training. Explore your potential!

7. Gain self discipline and personal organisation skills. Go 4x4 in life!

8. Compete with our sports teams against other Squadrons. Stay fit!

9. Learn outdoor living and survival skills. Connect with mother nature!

10. Take an ATC course in eg. skiing, mountaineering, sports refereeing.

Did you know ?

The Aims of the ATC:

+To promote and encourage among young people a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force.

+To provide training which will be useful in the Services and civilian life.

+To foster the spirit of adventure and develop qualities of leadership and good citizenship

The Air Training Corps' Motto

"Venture Adventure" - it means to go out and try something new.. nothing ventured, nothing gained.

How many things do we enjoy today that we had to be encouraged to do at first as children? Riding bikes is a good example. Now swap that for being in charge and resposible for cadets the same age as you. Scary? Only at first..

A Massive Family!

With almost 35,000 members, aged from 13 to 22 years, within over 1,000 Squadrons, the ATC is one of the country's premier youth organizations and the world's largest youth air training organization. The Cadets are supported by a volunteer Staff of nearly 10,000 plus 5,000 Civilian Committee Members..

Some Famous Cadets!

Linford Christie (Sprinter), Timothy Dalton (Actor), Rory Underwood (Rugby), Neil "Dr Fox" Fox (Radio), Robson Green (Actor), Patrick Moore (Astronomer), Richard Burton (Actor), Geoff Capes (Olympic Weightlifter), Gary Numan (Pop Singer), Lord Robertson (Chairman of NATO), Sir Ralph Robbins (Rolls Royce), and many of the highest ranking members of the RAF and Royal Navy!
